Josefina Miró Quesada Gayoso

About me

I am a Peruvian human rights attorney. My work brings together criminal, constitutional and international law, journalism and criminology. I am a Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford Law School, where I completed a Master of the Science of Law (JSM) in 2026 and am now a candidate for the Doctor of the Science of Law (JSD).

I pioneered the right to die with dignity in Peru. First at the Ombudsperson’s Office and then as an independent attorney, I won the country’s first two landmark cases on end-of-life choices: Ana Estrada’s, which recognised a new constitutional right and led to the first euthanasia in Peru, and María Benito’s, on the right to refuse life-sustaining treatment. In 2024 I co-founded Plataforma Dignidad, a Latin American interdisciplinary network to advance dignity at the end of life.

My work also spans gender-based violence, reproductive justice and free speech. I have advised the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea, taught law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), and consulted for organisations including the ILO, CLACAI and PROMSEX. Before turning to litigation I was a legal journalist at El Comercio, where I led an award-winning campaign on gender-based violence.

I hold an M.Phil. in Criminology with Distinction from the University of Cambridge and a law degree summa cum laude from PUCP. I am the author of two books, a TEDx speaker and a feminist activist — and, away from the law, a singer.
